Sam wasn't terribly surprised when he woke up before Dawn did. After everything she'd gone through with the shadows, he figured she needed all the rest she could get. Plus, this gave him the opportunity to be the first one into the bathroom, which is a chance he rarely got. He set about brushing his teeth first, thinking about how awesome it had been to defeat the shadows, and how happy he was to have things go back to a relative amount of normal.
By now, Sam really should have learned not to rely on "normal" lasting long.
The first flash of images across his line of vision made Sam gasp and drop his toothbrush into the sink. The second flash brought the blinding pain with it, and Sam put his head in his hands, letting out a weak noise of surprise and hurt as the full vision hit him.
( Cut for vision, whee! )When Sam's vision finally cleared, he found himself slumped on the floor, leaning against the wall with his hands still pressed against his temples. He managed to stand up, and turned the sink on to cold water to splash on his face. After a few moments of trying to get his breathing into check and willing his hands to stop shaking, he turned everything off, and opened the door quietly, thankful to see that Dawn was still asleep. It took him a surprisingly short time to decide whether or not to tell Dean, and even less time to get dressed and slip out the door.
As much as he didn't want to scare Dean,
he was scared, and Dean was the only person who could fix that.
