Scorpius Cabin, Alcove A2, Thursday Afternoon

Sam had hopefully survived yet another week of his workshop with Barney and Tink, and that meant he deserved a reward. Yes, curling up on his bed with a new book counted as a reward. He had a nerd reputation to uphold, after all.

Peter came into Sam's alcove without fanfare and immediately slumped down on Sam's bed. "Hey."

Sam was used to Peter coming in unannounced by now, thanks to their time in the cabin, but the slump was new. "Hey," he said, glancing over his book. "What's up?"

"Nothing," Peter said with a heavy sigh.

Sadly this was done without irony. Or arguably self-awareness.

"You sure about that?" Sam asked. He marked his page and shut his book, giving Peter his full attention.

"Lotta folks are leaving," Peter said, by way of a reply.

"Tell me about it. I wasn't expecting so many people to leave so soon," Sam said.

"It's weird," Peter said. "Not like I knew a lot of them but - still weird."

"It's not like we'll never see any of them again though," Sam pointed out. "There's always homecoming, and things like that." If it sounded like he'd been practicing with that thought, it's because he possibly had been.

"Yeah but that's different," Peter said. "For me anyway."

Sam got a thoughtful look, and scooted closer to Peter. "What do you mean?"

"People are leaving whose powers I have," Peter said. "I didn't realize how much I was using having them around as a safety net until they weren't here anymore."

For a moment, Sam felt guilty, like he should have been able to figure that out on his own. "You don't need a safety net," he said. "They've helped you figure out how their powers work, and that's enough."

"What if something goes wrong?" Peter asked. "What if I lose control?"

"We know you can be knocked out if your powers are going crazy," Sam said, thinking of the plague. "If something really does go wrong - which, I'd like to point out, it hasn't in months - you can be kept under control until we figure out how to fix you. And by 'we' I mean me," he added.

"Well at least someone with a brain would be on the case," Peter said. "But what if it's something bad? Like me turning into that bomb?"

"That's not going to happen," Sam said simply.

"Denial works that well as a proactive defense?" Peter asked, half smiling.

"It's not just denial," Sam said. "I don't think you're going to just wake up one day and explode. There'll be warning signs, or something, and then we can stop it."

"Think any of the new kids is going to have a dangerous power?" Peter asked.

"Not one that can't be controlled, or they wouldn't be allowed to come here," Sam said sensibly, moving to sit right next to Peter. "And if you do pick up another dangerous power from someone new, they'll be here to help you adjust to it."

"That sounds like logic," Peter said, giving Sam a sideways glance.

"That's because it is," Sam said. "I can be logical sometimes, when you're not."

"Doesn't that make you a bad influence on me?" Peter asked. "Being logical?"

"I'd like to think I'm a good influence," Sam said. "I'm the one who's not going to let anything bad happen to you."

"Thanks," Peter said. "Though Nathan may arm-wrestle you for the title."
