Peter's Apt, NYC, Wednesday afternoon

This week was going by far too quickly as far as Sam was concerned, and he was annoyed by how quickly it had become Wednesday until he realized what the date was. Peter's mention of their one year anniversary had gotten him to track down some other milestones in their relationship, and today was a pretty important one. He tried not to look too amused as he went to find Peter, not wanting to give himself away from the start.

Peter was in the kitchen, trying to figure out if he had enough things on hand to make dinner, or if they should give up on the idea of cooking and just go out.

Sam peeked into the kitchen, watching Peter for a minute. "Hey, what are you up to?"

"Trying to figure out if I can Top Chef something out of mustard and water," Peter replied. He closed the fridge door. "How come?"

"Nothing, I was just looking for you," Sam replied, coming up behind Peter and moving to try to wrap his arms around Peter's waist.

Peter moved his hands down to cover Sam's and pressed back into him. "Good job, then. Here I am."

"Yes, here you are," Sam said. With Peter so close, he couldn't resist kissing along his neck. "Don't worry about dinner. There's no shortage of places to go to. Or order in from."

"All good options," Peter agreed. He tilted his head to give Sam more room to work with.

"Especially the ones that don't necessarily involve leaving," Sam said. "Do you know what today is?"

"Wednesday?" Peter replied. Not that he was also hating how quickly the week was going by or anything.

"That's right. And it's the 14th," Sam said, kissing another trail up Peter's neck. "Do you know what we were doing a year ago?"

"Something together?" Peter guessed, a little distracted by Sam's kisses.

"That's a good guess," Sam said. "But then, that's a good guess for most of the last year, minus the time we've had to spend apart."

"Which is why it's been a pretty good year," Peter said. "Other than the times we've been apart."

"Especially since those times tended to suck more than usual," Sam said, slipping his hands to Peter's hips. "But we made up for it when we were together again. And a year ago today was the first time we...you know."

It was possible Peter didn't know, since he didn't like to read Sam's mind without permission, but the way Sam was getting closer might have given him a clue.

"Was it?" Peter asked. He thought back and put two and two together. "Huh. Guess so. That's a good anniversary."

"That's what I thought too," Sam said. "We'd gotten past the time my dad almost caught us. And the time I wasn't ready, and you stopped me before I did something stupid. There are a lot of guys who wouldn't have done that."

Peter couldn't help but facepalm at the memory of almost being caught by John. Even so, he said, "Kinda helps that I'm madly in love with you."

"I'm madly in love with you too," Sam said. "I want to be doing this a year from now."

Peter looked up at Sam. "I want to be doing this all the years from now."

Sam couldn't help the hesitation that came before declaring a long-term hope for himself. He'd spent so much of his life thinking that he couldn't have a normal future that the idea of having the exact future he wanted seemed crazy. But with Peter, it also seemed possible.

"I do too," he said. "For all the years that we've got."

Yeah, there was no way Peter wasn't going to try to kiss Sam after he said that.

Sam kissed Peter back right away, embracing the fluttering feeling in his stomach that came with the thought of getting to do this for the rest of his life.
