A mainland movie theater, Saturday afternoon

True to his word, Sam hadn't argued about going to see the movie Dean wanted to see for his birthday - until they got to the theater and he realized it was a 3D slasher movie.

"You're kidding, right?" he asked. "This is what you want to watch?"

"Hell, yeah," Dean said, all enthusiasm. "Don't you?"t

"That's going to depend a lot on whether or not the people who made the movie realize how unrealistic it is," Sam said.

"Dude, can't you just sit back and enjoy? Lots of blood and gore, probably some nudity, and in 3D. It's going to be awesome!"

"I guess a little mindless entertainment never killed anyone," Sam said. "Promise me you won't make any embarrassing noises if there are naked girls."

"I don't do that," Dean said.

"You could start," Sam pointed out. "And then I'd have to pretend I don't know you, and today would be such a bad day for that."

"You're the one who's been embarrassing at horror movies in the past," Dean said, as they joined the line at the concessions stand.

"I don't know what you're talking about," Sam said, looking innocent.

"Oh yeah, sure you don't," Dean said. "I mean what's embarrassing about re-enacting the pea soup bit of the Exorcist in the middle of a crowded theatre?"

"I still say I was sick," Sam replied. "Getting scared out of my mind didn't help."

"Hey, you're the one who insisted you had to come along with me," Dean said.

"I didn't want to be alone with Dad," Sam said. "And I didn't know I'd get so scared."

"Well, if you get scared this time, just remember I'm right here and I won't let a movie killer get you," Dean assured him. "Even if he is in 3D."

"I think I'm old enough to not get scared at the movies," Sam said. "Just because you're two years older for now doesn't mean I'm that young."

They got to the front of the line and Dean ordered tubs of popcorn and drinks for them both. "You know that still is weird. The losing three years thing."

"Yeah, I know," Sam agreed. "It's still hard to think about sometimes. But I keep trying to tell myself it could have been worse. Maybe we're closer now than we might have been."

"Yeah," Dean said. "And even if you were suddenly three years older, you were still the same dorky little brother," Dean told him fondly.

"Thanks, I think," Sam said.

"Any time." Dean handed Sammy his popcorn and drink and gathered up his own. "Let's go -- gotta make sure we get good seats."

"So we can see the gore right up close?" Sam asked.

"Now you're getting into the spirit!"

Sam smiled. "You must be contagious."

"Nah." Dean bumped shoulders with him. "Just taught you well."

Sam bumped Dean's shoulder in return. "Yeah, you really have."

"We're getting damned reflective here," Dean observed. "Usually need a few beers for that."

"We can do that later. The beers, I mean. If you want."

"Sure." He grinned. "Not going to turn down you offering to go out for drinks without me twisting your arm first."

"It's a special day, so things require special consideration," Sam explained.

"Hey, y'know if it hadn't been for that portal, I'd actually be legal now," Dean said. "Or back in our own year, I would be; technically we're both well over the legal age in this year..."

"You can vote now," Sam pointed out. "That's a pretty big deal. I don't know what difference being legal would make, besides being able to drink somewhere that's not home."

"Could always do that anyway with the handy dandy fake ID," Dean pointed out.

"Exactly. We just wouldn't have the worry about getting caught."

"I never worry too much about that anyway," Dean said confidently as they found their seats. "Here, better put on your glasses so we're ready."

Sam set his popcorn down long enough to get his glasses on and look at Dean. "How dorky do we look in these, do you think?"

"On a scale of one to ten? About an eight," Dean said. "But it's in a good cause."

"For the cause of entertainment," Sam said, laughing. "I guess you're right."

The lights in the theatre dimmed and Dean happily slouched lower in his seat with popcorn. "Here we go..."

Sam snuck a glance at Dean while he still good, and smiled at how happy he looked. No matter how the movie turned out to be, he was considering this a success.
