Parking Lot, Wednesday Morning

Sam woke up early, to try to finish packing and leave before anyone else in the cabin woke up. He thought about going to Dean and asking him for the keys to the car, but after listening to the radio, he was pretty sure he wasn't one of his brother's favorite people at the moment. Not that he could blame him - Sam wasn't too happy with himself either. But after everything else, he figured taking the car without asking would be a smaller crime (or at least, it wouldn't make Dean want to kill him more than he probably already did), and set off to where he thought the Impala was parked.

After talking with Zoe last night, Dean had done some research, backed his bag and went to sleep in the car. Because there was no fucking way he was going to let Sammy sneak by him.

Sam sighed as he approached the car and saw Dean asleep behind the wheel. After deciding that opening the door and pulling Dean out would be too much hassle, and would probably just piss him off more, Sam leaned in through the open window and went to hit the horn.

Dean's reflexes were good even when he was asleep, especially when he was in a situation he knew he had to be aware, so he reached out and grabbed Sammy's arm before his eyes had opened or Sammy could hit the horn. "My car."

"I can see that, since you decided to spend the night in it," Sam replied, trying to pull his arm back. "I need to borrow it," he added, wondering if, for some strange reason, the direct approach would work.

"You were going to steal it," Dean said opening his eyes to look at Sammy. "That's what we call it when you take something without permission. Or keys."

"It's not like I wasn't going to bring it back," Sam protested. "You know, once I find Dad."

"Nope," Dean said. "Not going to happen. I don't let spoiled brats drive my baby."

"I'm not a brat," Sam said. "This isn't some joyride, Dean. I have to catch up with Dad. We can catch up with him if you want to come, but I don't expect you to."

"I call 'em as I see 'em," Dean said calmly. "The way you acted with Zoe makes you a brat."

For his part, Sam did look ashamed at the mention of Zoe. "What did she tell you?"

"Lots. Among other things about how you didn't have to take orders because she's not your real mother," Dean said.

And there was the knot in his stomach again. "I didn't mean that," Sam said weakly.

"I should hope not because dude, I expect you to take orders from Dad and me and we're not your mother either."

Sam tried not to get angry, but he hated the idea of being ordered around too much. "And I guess the fact that I don't want to take orders from any of you doesn't matter?" he asked.

"See, that's where the spoiled brat part comes in. Because only a brat doesn't realize that you don't always get what you want."

"It's not about always getting what I want. It's about not following orders that are stupid," Sam snapped. "It doesn't bother you that Dad went off without saying anything to us?"

Dean shrugged. "Not like it's the first time. And I trust Dad to know best when it comes to this kind of thing." He gave Sammy a pointed look. "He probably didn't want to have to deal with an overgrown temper tantrum on top of finding out someone he knew just died horribly."

"I hope you have enough trust for the both of us," Sam said, choosing to ignore the comment about the temper tantrum. "I don't think he cares that the guy died, I think he cares that the guy had something he wants."

"Yeah because no one but you can have feelings," Dean shot back.

"I didn't say that," Sam snapped in return, before sighing. "Look, as much as I'd love to argue about whether or not Dad has feelings, the fact is, we should be with him. We need to find him."

"We don't need to do anything," Dean told him. "This is all about what you want to do."

"Fine, I want to be with Dad. Is that better?"

"And if I tell you no? Get your butt out of my car and back to the cabins?"

"I'll hitchhike," Sam said simply.

Dean rolled his eyes. "Yeah, because that's not stupid or insane at all. Do you even know where you're going?"
