Room 328, Tuesday Afternoon

After going to class and springing Dean from the clinic, Sam came back to his room to start researching. As much as he was trying to not think about what the demon had said to him, there was something that had stuck out in a not-entirely negative way - that there were others like him being watched by the demon too. It wasn't much to go on, but he figured it was worth looking into. He just had to figure out where to start.

Peter was a stubborn sort of person, which was why he came a-knocking at Sam's door.

Sam glanced at the door, and wondered if he could stay quiet enough that whoever was there would leave.

Then Scout barked and sniffed at the door, and Sam sighed. "Come in."

Peter came in and closed the door behind him. "Hey Scout. Hey Sam. How's it going?"

"Okay, I guess," Sam said, feeling a little better at seeing Peter. "How are you?"

"No classes today, I'm thrilled," Peter said. He went to take a seat. "You?"

"I had religion and cooking," Sam said. "They were both okay."

"I'm surprised you went," Peter said. He paused, looking thoughtful. "Wait, it's you. You probably regret there weren't more classes to get lost in today."

Sam couldn't help making a small smile. "If I could have snuck into other classes undetected, I would have. They make for nice distractions."

"You nerd." Peter made a mock-face of horror at him. More seriously, he said, "So you're still here. Thanks for that."

Sam rolled his eyes. "I couldn't leave with Dean still in the clinic. And I wouldn't leave without saying anything. It might be a voicemail so you can't try to stop me, but I'd still say something."

"Let's see," Peter said, thoughtfully. "I can fly faster than the speed of sound, I can do that tracking handwave thing that Bridge does, and I'm really damn charming when I ask people for favors. Yeah, I'd have to say your definition of 'can't try' and mine are worlds apart."

Sam's eyes narrowed a little as he looked at Peter. "Fine. I'll only call you after I've already gotten to where I need to go, and I'll find a spell that cloaks me from Bridge's handwave thing."

"Or, and I'm just spitballing here, but you could not go."

Dawn hesitated at the door to her own room, but decided she'd spent enough time alone that day. For that matter, so had Sam.

She came in carrying a plate with a couple of sandwiches and a glass of milk, and left them on Sam's nightstand without comment before flopping onto her bed. She reached under her pillow for the book she'd been reading before all of this started. "Did you go out at all today?"

Sam watched Dawn as she came in, eying the sandwiches before turning to see her flop down. "Yeah, of course," he said. "I had to go to class, and I went to check on Dean. You didn't have to make me any food, you know."

"Who said it's for you?" She turned a page, not that she'd read the one she'd been on. "I could just be feeding the room gnomes or something. Dork, of course they're for you, and yeah, I did."

"How's Dean?"

"I'm still not that hungry," Sam said. "And Dean's okay. We got him out of the clinic. But Alec left town again."

"So they'll be there when you are," she was watching him carefully. A Winchester not eating meant things were very, very serious. "Alec--god damn it."

In a sudden movement, she sat up and flung her book at the wall. "So Dean's a mess, is what you're saying."

Sam's eyes got a little wide at Dawn's reaction. "He...physically, he's gotten a lot better. Mentally? Yeah. But I don't know what to do to make it better."

"I don't know either, but now he's gonna be twice as worried about Alec as he would have been anyway. The timing's just--yuck, y'know? I mean, if I were all injured and you took off, I'd be...Well, it'd be bad."

Sam squirmed a little at the mention of taking off. "I wouldn't leave if you were hurt. I could never do that."

She noticed the squirm. "Would you leave once I was better?"

"Probably not," Sam said. He couldn't tell Peter, and not her though. "I've just been doing a lot of thinking about how safe it is for me to be here."

She'd caught the probably, of course. She just wasn't nearly ready to deal with it, because the idea of Sam leaving made her heart twist and hurt in ways she hadn't felt since Buffy died. "You mean like how it's so much safer to be here because there are people who can help you when you need it?"

"I don't mean safe for me. I mean safe for everyone else," Sam explained.
